Down-and-distance is one of the first filters on every call sheet, but it should not be the last. Field position changes the available space, the cost of a negative play, the defensive menu and the offense’s risk tolerance. When every 2nd-and-medium or 3rd-and-long snap is rolled into one bucket, those differences disappear.

That is the purpose of the Zone × Down & Distance view: identify where an offense’s efficiency actually lives, then use film to determine why.

The Difference Between a Tendency and a Situational Identity

An overall down-and-distance table can tell a staff how often an offense stays on schedule on 2nd & 4–6. It cannot tell the staff whether that production comes backed up, near midfield or inside the red zone.

That distinction changes preparation. A defense may be sound against an opponent’s general third-down menu and still have a specific problem against its red-zone money-down package. An offense may look ordinary over the full field but consistently create an advantage when backed up, where one conversion can flip field position.

The 2025 NJAC data produced several clear examples.

Salisbury’s Red-Zone Money-Down Edge

Salisbury posted an 83.3% success rate in the red zone on 3rd & 4–6. The NJAC average in that same window was 40.8%, giving Salisbury a 42.5-point advantage—the largest qualifying situational edge in the graphic.

For a defensive staff, this belongs in the Must Defend section of the plan. The number does not identify the answer by itself; it identifies where the film study should begin. Which play families repeatedly appeared? Who received the primary touch or target? How did Salisbury answer pressure, leverage and reduced space?

The value of the split is prioritization. It tells the staff which six-yard window deserves more attention than a generic red-zone third-down cutup.

Rowan Stayed on Schedule While Backed Up

Rowan’s strongest edge came on 2nd & 4–6 while backed up. The offense recorded a 100.0% success rate against a 60.7% conference average, a 39.3-point advantage.

That is a meaningful self-scout and opponent-scout signal. Second-and-medium is already a flexible call for the offense. In the qualifying sample, Rowan avoided the negative sequence that turns manageable downs into obvious passing situations and punting drives.

The next step is not to assume the mechanism. It is to isolate the snaps and determine whether the efficiency came from run/pass balance, a repeatable concept family, a featured player or answers built specifically for that field position.

Christopher Newport Won a Field-Flip Down

Christopher Newport succeeded on 60.0% of backed-up 3rd & 7–10 snaps in the qualifying sample. The NJAC average was 25.2%, creating a 34.8-point edge.

That is a pressure-release window. The defense has the offense behind schedule and near its own goal line, but the offense is still converting at more than twice the league rate. A defensive plan that treats every backed-up long-yardage down as an automatic advantage can lose hidden field position quickly.

For CNU’s own self-scout, the same split identifies a package worth protecting. For an opponent, it identifies a cutup that should be studied before the broad third-down reel.

Five of Eight Teams Created Their Biggest Edge While Backed Up

The conference-wide pattern may be more useful than any single team result. Five of the eight NJAC offenses in the graphic produced their largest qualifying advantage in backed-up territory.

That does not mean backed-up offense was the conference’s most efficient situation. It means those five teams separated most sharply from the league baseline there.

How a Staff Can Use the Split

For opponent preparation, the grid should help order the film—not replace it. Start with the largest relative edges, identify the repeatable play families and featured players, then build the defensive answer into the corresponding call-sheet section.

For self-scout, compare where the offense creates its biggest advantage with where it falls below the conference baseline. The goal is not simply to call the best-performing concept more often. The goal is to understand whether the edge is sustainable, whether opponents have adjusted and which constraint answers must remain available.

For weekly planning, stop treating a down-and-distance bucket as one universal situation. A call sheet that separates backed-up, midfield and red-zone versions of the same down can expose very different priorities.

Methodology and Sample Context

Success rate follows the standard schedule-based definition used in the report: gain at least 40% of yards to go on first down, 60% on second down, or convert on third or fourth down.

To reduce noise, the graphic considers standard first- through third-down situations populated for at least seven NJAC teams. The source workbook displays a team value only when that cell contains at least three plays. These rates are scouting signals, not proof of the cause behind them; the film remains necessary, particularly in lower-volume situational windows.

The larger point is simple: down-and-distance tells a staff when the snap occurred. Adding field zone starts to explain the environment in which the offense won it.
